How to make accessories work

Accessories can make or break a room. The trick is, an accessory should enhance the decor not hinder your decorating scheme. Accessories should always reflect who you are – your tastes, your style, and your interests, to give a room real personality.

To change the look of a carpeted room or add some drama, try placing an area rug right on top of the existing rug. This is an inexpensive way to freshen up any room in your home.

Although not a major purchase, an accessory can become the focal point of a room. A large, dramatic painting over the fireplace or sofa can set the mood you want. A unique collection of vases, pillows or photo frames can set the tone and create interest. In the foyer, a unique mirror will enliven a bare wall as it reflects light down the hallway, illuminating an otherwise dark corridor.
